BJJ: Flávio Canto’s takedown with choke over Travis Stevens at the 2010 judo worlds

Flávio Canto made frequent use of submission techniques throughout his career.

Judoka Flávio Canto had a stellar career on the mats. With his beautiful takedowns and endless stamina, he won bronze at Athens 2004 and gold at the Santo Domingo Pan-Ams in 2003. Good as he was at takedowns, though, he was especially good at ne waza — techniques used on the ground.

At one point Canto started training in BJJ gyms, and the results came. In one of his memorable ground moments, he faced Travis Stevens, a black-belt under Renzo Gracie. It went down at the 2010 judo worlds in Lisbon, Portugal.

Right at the start, Canto pulled Stevens and put the American in an omoplata. Without finishing, Canto kept attacking on the ground, until he made the decisive move: with a nice takedown, he landed on top and achieved a choke from the mount. Check it out below.
