One can never necessarily be completely “ready” for a real self defense situation, however, we can increase our odds of surviving against a violent attacker by targeting certain moves, and training various types of martial arts. In a street fight, you should try to run away, use an improvised object for protection, or grapple.
If someone tries to punch you, you better be ready to close that distance and block that punch… And then to follow up!
Third Guevara, a BJJ black belt under Tom DeBlass and head instructor of Rizal Jiu-Jitsu in Manila, Philippines, recalled the time he caught a burglar inside his house… Third went straight into action and did not hesitate to take the intruder out and neutralize him.
He wrote:
“This happened 3 years ago. Went out to buy something, 5 minutes after found a burglar inside. Instinct kicked in, did a body lock, arms trapped, dragged him outside and slapped a rear naked choke. He woke up and still attempting to run, choked him for the second time and pinned him with a shoulder lock and knee by the neck (not full weight, just enough to keep him down). Told him just stop resisting as he won’t be able to go anywhere. I held him down for about 20-30mins until the authorities arrived. Slapped him a little just to shut him up but didn’t throw any strikes at all. Always lock your doors folks! And train Jiujitsu, it saves lives!”
