The UFC 266 fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Brian Ortega was a close one… And, even though Volkanovski won, he was almost tapped out by Ortega’s vicious Guillotine Choke.
He somehow escaped the choke, though; but that’s not to say that lights weren’t shutting down around Volkanovski as he was struggling to survive the submission.
In a recent conversation with Michael Bisping, Volkanovski revealed how it felt to be on the receiving end of such a deep Guillotine Choke:
Everything was just textbook, beautiful. The way he did that was actually beautiful to watch.
I remember holding on, doing everything that I thought I needed to do, trying to get that hip up, and it wasn’t working.The lights were still sort of dimming and I’m like: “F*ck, I ain’t stopping. I’m gonna keep pushing, I’m gonna keep going. He’s either gonna tire [and] his arms will gas before I go out or I die, whatever it is, we’ll see.”
Volkanovski didn’t quite. He persevered and managed to get out of the Guillotine Choke in the end:
I obviously knew that he was tiring and I am already, while I am still getting strangled, thinking: “I am gonna get up, I am gonna f*ck this guy up.”
