A tribute to Carlson Gracie — fighter, teacher, friend

Carlson in 1955. Agência O Globo

I’m emphatic when we talk about the relationship of Brazilians with their idols. Here in Brazil, idols are only good when they win or are in a good moment in their career. The entire legacy is forgotten after a defeat, or when a new star comes along. I thought about this after witnessing, at the 2016 BJJ Worlds, the homage the IBJJF paid to our idols of the past, world champions and pioneers of the sport.

The sport is made up of idols, so if we do not create this mindset, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will never reach the level it deserves. Today, I would like to pay tribute to our great and dear Master Carlson Gracie. A tough guy, owner of refined Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, courage and above-average intelligence; charismatic, controversial…

Well, I could spend a few minutes describing Carlson, but with so much of a story to tell, but little space to live up to this legacy, instead I put together a photo gallery with a few episodes of his career as a fighter, as a teacher and as a friend.
