The martial arts community has been abuzz over the release of Enola Holmes on Netflix, and it’s easy to see why. Martial arts — and Japanese ju-jitsu in particular — are not only heavily embedded in the film’s plot, but also based on the history of “suffrajitsu.” You can learn more about the connections between the film and its real-life inspiration here.
It’s no great surprise that the film would focus so heavily on martial arts. Sixteen-year-old Millie Bobby Brown (of Stranger Things fame) worked on the movie both as a producer and an actor, playing the titular character. Brown has significant experience in boxing and also trains jiu-jitsu, and according to her co-stars, she picks up on techniques fast.
