5 People We Run Into In Jiu-Jitsu

We sure do meet many different types of people in Jiu-Jitsu don’t we? Jiu-Jitsu brings in all kinds of people that are all there for different reasons and yet somehow for the same purpose. This is one of the greatest things about Jiu-Jitsu, is that we meet so many people we would never meet in our normal day to day life. White Collar and Blue Collar blend. Rich and poor, athletic and un-athletic, male and  female and all races and religions. On the Mats we are all the same. It is interesting to look at the many different categories of people who we may meet in our training journey. Here are a few of the categories I find most common.

The Former Athlete– This guy is trying to find something new now that he/she is done with school sports and is now normally one of the more dedicated students. This person however can be a little to aggressive.

The Un-Athletic – These are the “nerds” who end up finding Jiu-Jitsu in order to feel more confident and improve their self-esteem. These people are often very quiet, but end up being quite sociable once they feel comfortable.

The Professional-This is the guy who comes rushing in at the last second because he/she flies from the office to get to the gym. While Levels of dedication vary with this person, they often become a go to person for advice both on and off the mat.

The Foreigner– This is the person who is from out of the country, but has made the dedication to come train in a new land. This person is often very dedicated and quite skilled. The one challenge this person can face is isolation, but luckily people in Jiu-Jitsu are normally quite friendly.

The Fighter– This is the person who comes in and thinks they are just going to whoop ***. They often have other black belts and are sometimes known for their street fighting or MMA record. They often end up either leaving very soon or end up being humbled and work their way through the ranks.

What other stereo types have you ran into during your time training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
