4 Reasons Your Friends Should Try Jiu-Jitsu

To outsiders, the subculture of BJJ (aka “pajama wrestling”) must seem odd at the very least. Afer all, it’s a “bunch of sweaty dudes rolling around on the ground trying to twist each other’s limbs,” right?

As BJJ addicts we know why jiu-jitsu is so awesome and want to share it with our non-BJJ friends.

Here are four reasons your friends should give BJJ a try.

1) It is a great stress reliever.

Do you ever feel like you want to choke a coworker or client in business? Well at jiu-jitsu you can try to choke your training partners, and no one is going to call the police on you!

We all get periods of frustration at work and in life. How do you deal with them? Go for drinks at happy hour? BJJ is a healthier outlet to deal with stress.

After an hour of training BJJ, your problems seem to shrink in significance, and that annoying person is now easier to deal with.

2) You can kill two birds with one stone.

Most of us are so busy that we don’t see our friends often enough. And finding the time to stay fit and take care of our health is just one more thing to add to our to-do list.

Heading to BJJ class a few times a week allows us to get really fit and hang out with our friends at the same time. It also allows us to make new friends. People are more likely to stick with training if they know their friends are there.

With Brazilian jiu-jitsu, we form friendships based on doing healthy, positive activities together instead of drinking alcohol or liking social media posts.

3) You will learn self-defense.

The majority of people have doubts about their ability to deal with an aggressive street situation. BJJ gained a reputation as a martial art that enables a smaller person to defend against and beat a larger, stronger attacker.

A few months of learning BJJ will equip you with tools to deal with common self-defense scenarios. It feels much better to have confidence in your ability to defend yourself.

4) You will have a better understanding of MMA.

There are a ton of rabid UFC fans out there. While most people understand the basics of watching two fighters punch and kick, they don’t understand the science of ground fighting. It just appears to be two guys clutching onto each other.

Many new BJJ students have expressed how, after a few months of training, they have an entirely new appreciation for ground grappling in MMA. They now have some idea of what is happening in that phase of an MMA fight and enjoy watching the fights all the more.

Share this with or tag a friend who you think would enjoy trying a BJJ class.
