Meet Dorian Olivarez: rising high school junior, and your new EBI combat jiu-jitsu world champion. Training under his father, Mike Olivarez, and representing Team Olivarez, Dorian has additionally benefited from cross-training opportunities with the internationally famous B-Team in Austin, Texas, which has produced world-class training partners for Olivarez like Ethan Crelinsten and Damien Anderson.
Teen stars are gradually becoming the norm in jiu-jitsu these days, between the likes of Cole Abate and the Funegra girls of AOJ, Helena Crevar of New Wave, and — until a very recent birthday — twin phenoms Kade and Tye Ruotolo of Atos. Olivarez proves himself no exception to the trend.
Last weekend, Olivarez gave a stunning performance that earned him first place at EBI promotion Combat Jiu-Jitsu Worlds. CJJ Worlds, masterminded by Eddie Bravo, is a submission grappling event typically popular with both elite jiu-jitsu athletes and budding MMA stars, due to the allowance of open-handed strikes.
Olivarez has been on the rise for a while. Prior to cutting a swathe through the men’s bantamweight division at CJJ Worlds — including submission victories over some seasoned adult black belts — the teenager won the ADCC Dallas Open in the advanced category. While currently only seventeen years old, Olivarez is clearly ready to make a statement in the no-gi submission grappling world.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this article characterized Olivarez as a B-Team representative and high school graduate. While he does train periodically with B-Team, he trains primarily under his father, jiu-jitsu black belt Mike Olivarez, and officially represents Team Olivarez. In addition, he is still a rising junior in high school.
