🥋 Best Method to Re-Stretch a Shrunk Hemp Gi
Step 1 — Warm Water + Conditioner Soak
This relaxes the fibers so they can be reshaped.
Fill a tub with lukewarm water (not hot)
Add:
1–2 tbsp hair conditioner or
A small amount of gentle fabric softener
Submerge the gi completely
Let it soak for 30–45 minutes
👉 Conditioner helps loosen the hemp fibers so they can be stretched without damage.
Step 2 — Gentle Stretch While Damp
Do NOT wring it.
Remove the gi and gently press water out with a towel
Lay it flat on a clean surface
Start stretching:
Sleeves (lengthwise first)
Skirt length
Shoulder width
Pant length if needed
Use slow, steady tension — not aggressive pulling.
Think: “persuade the fibers” not “force them.”
Step 3 — Air Dry While Held in Shape
This is key.
Options:
If needed, apply very light, even tension to the sleeves while damp — just enough to keep their length as the fabric dries. Also tension vertically if the gi became too short on your torso. Do not use excessive heavy weights or clips that could damage the fabric.
Or lay flat and reshape every 30 min while drying
Never tumble dry after this process.
🔥 Pro Tip (Used by Competitors)
Wear the gi slightly damp and do:
Arm circles
Light shrimping
Shoulder mobility drills
Body heat + movement helps the fabric mold back to your frame. Old-school trick but it works surprisingly well.
⚠️ What NOT to Do
❌ No hot water
❌ No dryer heat
❌ No aggressive yanking on seams
❌ No steam iron directly on patches/embroidery
Too much force can distort the weave or stress stitching — especially important for a structured gi like Yuki or Hempo.
Realistic Expectations
You can usually recover:
~50–80% of sleeve/pant length
~30–50% of overall shrinkage
If it shrank a lot, it likely means the wash hit higher temps than intended. Hemp is tough but still reacts like cotton when heat is involved.
