How to Shrink a BJJ Gi Safely (Without Ruining It)

Introduction

One of the most common questions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is how to shrink a BJJ gi without damaging it. Gis are usually made from cotton or cotton blends, which naturally shrink when exposed to heat and moisture. Understanding how to control this process can help you get the perfect fit.

Most gis shrink 1–2 inches after washing, depending on the fabric and weave.

Why BJJ Gis Shrink

Shrinkage happens because cotton fibers relax when exposed to heat and water. During manufacturing, fibers are stretched and woven tightly. Washing releases this tension, causing the material to contract.

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Wash Warm

If your gi is too large, wash it in warm water.

Avoid extremely hot temperatures because excessive heat can damage fibers.

Step 2: Use the Dryer Carefully

Place the gi in the dryer for 10-minute intervals.

After each cycle:

  • remove the gi

  • try it on

  • repeat if necessary

Step 3: Stop When the Fit Is Right

Once your gi fits properly, switch to cold water washing and air drying to prevent further shrinkage.

Pro Tip

Different weaves shrink differently.

Typical shrink resistance:

  • pearl weave: low

  • gold weave: moderate

  • single weave: higher

Final Thoughts

Shrinking a gi should always be done gradually. Small adjustments are safer than aggressive heat cycles.
