The Inside Trip coming off a Sit Up Guard from De La Riva (although it can be done from a lot of different open guards) was one of those moves in BJJ where I knew it worked. But I couldn’t get it to work for me.
The move is fundamentally sound and I see others execute it. But whenever I would go for it. I seemed to always get stuffed. The person would drive their knee down into me and stop it.
My buddy Derek and I were having dinner recently and he said that he was having the same problem with it. When he sits up. The person just smashes him back down.
We almost tried to fix it inside the restaurant. But we figured there is probably a policy against grown men butt scooting around on the floor.
Anyways. Last year in a BJJ competition. In the scramble of a match I did something different. I had a little “A-Ha” light bulb moment that I always talk about in regards to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Instead of just driving into the person or trying to scoop the leg I got my opponent to post on the other leg first.
So here’s the setup.
From your De La Riva Sit up. You can also get from various open guards when the person is over top of you.
I’m going to position myself out the outside of their body. This is kind of a back up plan. Ideally I don’t want to me in the direction of their full power. Otherwise it will be too easy for them to pass my guard.
Next. If for some reason the person drives their knee in and I can’t stop it. I need to press of my hand and foot to butt scoot back.
Now whether they do that or not. My goal is to get him to post on the other foot. So I will drive to the side and once I feel his weight shift. Boom. We do a stand up and base, technical standup and suck the foot up.
Getting the person to post on their food first made all the difference in regards to getting the sweep to work for me.
So if you’re in the same boat that Derek and I were in. Where you go for to the Sit Up Guard and try to make the inside trip sweep happen. But the person drives you down and passes. Take the adjustments in this BJJ technique video and see if they help!
As always, thanks for watching!
