UFC fighter Yoel Romero has won a major lawsuit against Gold Star Performance Products over tainted supplements that resulting in him testing positive for a banned substance in 2016, according to MMA Junkie.
Romero initially faced a potential two-year suspension after testing positive for Ibutamoren in February 2016. However, he placed the blame on a tainted supplement, and after USADA was provided with the supplement in question, they found that it did indeed contain the banned substance and did not list it as an ingredient.
Almost two years after the test result, Romero filed a lawsuit against Gold Star Performance Products, and now, a year later, he’s emerged victorious.
Romero and his lawyer celebrated the victory:
The initial award was $3 million for lost wages, $3 million for “reputable harm,” and $3 million for emotional damage, but in accordance with New Jersey’s Consumer Fraud Act, the amount was tripled because Gold Star was found to have committed consumer fraud. However, given the relatively small size of Gold Star Performance Products, it’s uncertain if Romero will ever receive the full $27.45 million he won.
