World Series of Grappling to award $725k in prizes during a 6-month circuit in North America leading to grand finale in Las Vegas
Welcome to the World Series of Grappling. This new groundbreaking Jiu-Jitsu promotion promises to take the sport to a whole different level. The brain child of entrepreneurs Mike Ciprianni and Shawn Fowler, the WSG was born destined to be something special. If you have ever had the dream of opening your own academy, your dream is just one good WSG performance away.
The first season will extend through six months with events scattered all over North America. The first one is already scheduled for July 28, in Los Angeles, California. New York, Miami, Dallas and Chicago are also confirmed as host cities for the first season, which will feature Gi divisions only (The second season is already planned as No-Gi only) . The WSG will have two weight classes: Up to 180lb and Over 180lb. There will also be no belt color divisions. Competitors 16 years of age and older, from blue belt to black belt, will compete in the same bracket. Regular WSG matches will be 5 minutes long. The finals will have three 5-minute rounds before a 5-judge panel. Matches will be won via submission, referee stoppage, referee decisions, forfeiture, disqualification and injury. No points or advantages will be awarded.
The WSG will award $725,000 in prizes all the way to the grand finale in Las Vegas Nevada. The top 10 athletes in each qualifying city will walk home with $20,000 in prizes. Athletes placing 11- 20th place, will receive an automatic free entry into the next qualifying city for another opportunity to place in the Top10. Athletes will have the ability, even if they win, to compete from city to city to win more cash prizes.
The grand finale in Las Vegas, Nevada, will offer another $100,000 in prizes and it will feature the best 50 grapplers coming from the qualifying events. If an athlete were to win all five qualifiers and the finals they would walk away with $200,000 for that season and be crowned the champion for that season. There will also be $25,000 prizes for teams/associations and academy with the most athletes in the top 20 in the Las Vegas finals.
