Jiu-jitsu isn’t the most expensive activity out there, but if you’re living in poverty, paying for even a used gi might be more than your bank account can handle.
2019 UAEJJF Abu Dhabi World Pro winner Gabriel Sousa is doing his part to help future jiu-jitsu practitioners in his home country of Brazil. Today, Sousa revealed that with the help of the rest of ZR BJJ Team California, he was able to collect thirty used gis to donate across three different social projects in Brazil.
Sousa told the Jiu-Jitsu Times that he was able to collect all the gis in just a week. The gis will be distributed between ZR Team Peniel (Recife, Pernambuco), Projeto Crer (Fortaleza, Ceará), and Projeto Medianeiras (Fortaleza, Ceará). The uniforms will then be provided to students whose financial situations have created a barrier that’s prevented them from being able to afford a gi.
Sousa shared a video about his efforts and said that his plan included “inspiring and motivating people to help the ones who need us.” As we deal with this tough time of social distancing and, of course, no jiu-jitsu, gestures like Sousa’s are great reminders that we can all do our part to make someone else’s life a bit happier.
