Weekend grappling recap: Results from BJJ Stars 8, Fight To Win 200, IBJJF Dublin Open

It was a relatively busy weekend in competitive grappling, with major events taking place around the world. Most notably, Mica Galvao impressed at the BJJ Stars eight-man gi grand prix where he defeated three elite competitors to win the BJJ Stars middleweight title. Also, Fight To Win held its 200th event in Hawaii, and the IBJJF Dublin Open featured a number of Europe’s top grapplers.

BJJ Stars 8

Brazilian promotion BJJ Stars returned to action with a card loaded with talent. Galvao won the stacked eight-man gi grand prix, defeating Leandro Lo, Mauricio Oliveira, and, in the final, Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa. This was yet another strong showing from the teenage phenom, and his biggest accomplishment yet in the gi.

The card also showcased a number of ADCC-rules matches. Demian Maia returned for his first grappling match in 15 years to submit Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira; Fabricio Andrey earned a decision win over Alex Sodre; Gutemberg Pereira tapped Fellipe Andrew in under one minute; and Bea Mesquita picked up a submission decision win.

Fight To Win 200

Fight To Win 200 took place on Saturday, April 30, live from Hawaii, where MMA and grappling legend Baret Yoshida secured a submission win over Jeffrey Huang. Also, Fight To Win owner Seth Daniels stepped up on short notice in a no-gi black belt match an won by kimura.

IBJJF Dublin Open

Still less than six months into his black belt career, Tarik Hopstock impressed at the IBJJF Dublin Open. Hopstock won double gold in the gi, picking up a win over Tommy Langaker in the middleweight division. For his part, Langaker won gold in the middleweight division of the no-gi Open.
