It takes a lot to be a mom and a lot more to be a grandma, but 70-year-old Sandi Crawford has gone and one-upped everyone by being a great-grandma who also does jiu-jitsu.
Crawford’s daughter, brown belt Leslie Gardineer, shared a video of the mother-daughter duo training jiu-jitsu together. And to make things even cooler, Gardineer says that these two aren’t the only ones in the family who recreationally choke each other.
“We actually have four generations in our family training now,” Gardineer told the Jiu-Jitsu Times. She also said that her mom has Sjogren’s Syndrome, which is an autoimmune disorder similar to Lupus. “[She] was struggling to get out of bed in the morning. I asked her to just come do technique and learn a little self-defense. Her symptoms have decreased tremendously and she tries EVERYTHING! She actually scares me… A LOT! Jiu-jitsu has truly changed her life!”
Crawford isn’t slowing down any time soon, either. According to Gardineer, she’s not just drilling anymore — she’s rolling, too. When you consider the 67-year-old woman who just earned her black belt after winning gold at Brazilian Nationals and all the women who teamed up to expand the IBJJF Master divisions earlier this year, it’s safe to say that jiu-jitsu truly can be for everyone.
