Nicky Ryan and Paulo Miyao gave the crowd a fantastic match at ADCC 2019 and finally, the footage is available for all to watch on Flograppling’s YouTube channel. The match came about after Nicky Ryan beat Shane Jamil Hill Taylor by points 2-0 in the opening round, whereas Paulo Miyao cruised to a 5-0 victory over Kento Imawato. This set up a second round match that wouldn’t have looked out of place if it was the final, between one of the most dominant forces in the lighter weight-classes and one of the brightest prospects this sport has ever seen.
Although Nicky Ryan would eventually fall short in this match and Paulo Miyao would go on to claim Bronze in the most prestigious No Gi Tournament on the planet, it was this performance and his run in the Featherweight bracket as a whole that prompted John Danaher to award Ryan with his Brown Belt only a few weeks later. The tournament proved to be an unusual one for Miyao, who fell in the next round to Augusto Mendes before meeting yet another teenager in the Third Place Match, Tye Ruotolo.
Although Miyao beat both of his young opponents at ADCC 2019, they both impressed massively in their respective performances against him. Even more so when considering that Ryan was a purple belt at the time and Tye Ruotolo was only awarded his purple belt months after the tournament, alongside his twin brother Kade.
