Patino awarded Oliveira his black belt in May of 2010.
Oliveira had some significant success in jiu-jitsu competitions throughout his career as a blue and purple belt, most notably conquering the CBJJE South American Championships in 2008. He has since heavily incorporated his grappling skills into his MMA career, taking nineteen of his thirty wins via submission.
Oliveira most recently took home a big win at UFC 256 against Tony Ferguson in December of last year, carrying on a winning streak that now spans eight fights. His next fight will be against Michael Chandler for the UFC lightweight title, which was previously occupied by the now-retired Khabib Nurmagomedov.
