UFC Orlando: Rani Yahya’s kata-gatame

This Saturday, MMA fans were treated to a UFC show in Orlando, Florida, with the main event being a devastating win by Jeremy Stephens over Josh Emmett, and the co-main event seeing Jéssica Bate-Estaca dominate Tecia Torres.

Two thousand three ADCC champion Rani Yahya was our standout, though, as the Constrictor Team fighter put his jiu-jitsu to work against Russell Doane. After commanding the first two rounds with his ground game, he came back hungry for round 3.

Having called his opponent into guard and hook-sweeping, Yahya worked on his grip with arm and neck, finishing with a kata-gatame. Locked on half-guard on the wrong side, he propped his free knee beyond Doane’s waist, making it easier to arrive on the other side to conclude the move.
