Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida has opened up the UFC 224 main card with a bang!
Machida took on “The Phenom” Vitor Belfort…and the he took his head off.
The two touched gloves and were off. Lyoto hopped back and forth lightly on his feet as the two kept their distance.
Lyoto started things off with a body kick. Another thirty seconds went by and he threw a leg kick. Vitor threw nothing, though.
The crowd was definitely not liking it.
Befort charged in with a one-two but Machida followed up with a hook kick. That definitely woke Vitor up, but he stayed in the game, and the feeling out process continued.
Machida came in with a one-two-high-kick but didn’t get much. He soon followed with a leg kick as well.
Belfort stayed patient.
The crowd again showed their displeasure.
Vitor charged in for a second time with punches, but Machida got out of the way.
Lyoto threw an inside leg kick then followed up with a head kick.
Machida threw two kicks, but Belfort caught the last one and punched the Dragon before the round ended.
Round 2 started out with a bit more action. The two exchanged punches and Machida continued with his kicks.
The crowd then started to boo, but then, Lyoto took a page out of Anderson Silva’s book and threw a straight head kick right through Vitor’s arms, and Belfort dropped like a sack of potatoes.
Knowing that his opponent was out cold, Lyoto didn’t bother to swarm in and finish with punches. Instead, he put his hands on his hips, bowed, and dropped to his knees. He then congratulated Vitor as the latter came to, showing the legend the respect he deserved.
History was made tonight as well, as Vitor Belfort, one of the most famous faces in mixed martial arts, announced his retirement.
