Both Tye Ruotolo and Mikey Musumeci won their submission grappling bouts at ONE Fight Night 13 on August 4.
Top BJJ competitors Mikey Musumeci and Tye Ruotolo both picked up pivotal victories in their submission grappling matches at ONE Fight Night 13 on Friday, August 4.
In the evening’s co-main event, Musumeci successfully defended his ONE flyweight submission grappling world title against the organization’s strawweight MMA world champion, Jarred Brooks.
And before that, Ruotolo submitted lightweight MMA contender Dagi Arslanaliev, earning a shot at the inaugural ONE welterweight submission grappling world title in his next appearance.
Mikey Musumeci taps Jarred Brooks to retain world title
Musumeci came into his bout with Brooks as a sizeable favorite, and despite some crafty defensive work from the MMA standout, the BJJ black belt was eventually able to secure the finish.
Musumeci spent the match’s opening few minutes attacking from his closed guard, eventually achieving a clean back take where he began working toward the choke. But after several moments of some inactivity, referee Vitor Ribeiro returned the grapplers to their feet.
Wasting no time, Musumeci again returned to closed guard, this time looking for upper-body attacks. After just a minute of action, he secured a reverse triangle choke while simultaneously threatening Brooks’ free arm.
The tap came at 7:30 into the 10-minute match, with Brooks submitting to the triangle-armbar combination.
Musumeci is now 5-0 in ONE Championship and has successfully defended his world title three times.
Tye Ruotolo submits Dagi Arslanaliev, earns world title shot
Ruotolo needed less than three minutes to dispatch Arslanaliev. After a brief feeling-out period on the feet, the American brought the match to the canvas, rolling into a leg entanglement.
Arslanaliev defended his legs well, but Ruotolo stayed on the offensive and continued to attack submission after submission.
About two and a half minutes into the contest, Ruotolo attacked an outside heel hook and Arslanaliev appeared to tap. The grapplers paused briefly, but both quickly realized the match wasn’t yet over. Ruotlo pounced, immediately securing his foe’s back before sinking in a clean rear-naked choke.
After the bout, Ruotolo was awarded a $50,000 performance bonus. The victory also earned the 20-year-old a shot at the inaugural ONE welterweight submission grappling world title in his next bout.
The Atos representative is now 4-0 with three submission wins in ONE Championship appearances.
