Francesca Simon-Carboni used to find it difficult to remain cool under pressure in her financial services job, but then she started learning jiu-jitsu. At a recent TED Talk event, Francesca recounted an experience from one of her martial arts classes, where the instructor surprised her by asking her to fend off attacks from two senior black belt students simultaneously. Francesca applied what the instructor had taught her, stayed calm in the face of adversity, and successfully defended herself. She says that these days, whenever she gets bogged down with different aspects of her job, she always recalls that jiu-jitsu class, keeps a clear head and deals with each issue in turn.
