The Bizarre World Of Fake Martial Arts

Before Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu made it to the shores of the USA there was a lot of different martial arts on the scene. Hollywood movies sparked the curiosity of the West and those in the East were quick to oblige. Most of these martial arts were striking base. Very few outside of Judo practiced grappling in any form. Bruce Lee was one of the first to say that grappling was of value.

Many Easter Martial Arts were developed so that poor people could defend themselves against armed raiders on horseback. These arts could translate into armed combat against other men but this was not their intended purpose initially.

Like the hair metal bands of the 80’s these martial arts dominated the scene, until the Nirvana of martial arts, BJJ came along and basically rendered worthless most other arts.

There is a distinct residue left from that era, and this documentary captures a lot of it. Enjoy!
