Teenage standout Dorian Olivarez of The B-Team won gold at the Combat Jiu-Jitsu Worlds: The Bantamweights.
The Combat Jiu-Jitsu Worlds: The Bantamweights took place on Sunday, July 30, and 17-year-old standout Dorian Olivarez took home the tournament title after an outstanding, four-win performance.
A decorated high school wrestler and BJJ blue belt training out of Austin’s B-Team, Olivarez is now the youngest-ever CJJ world champion.
Olivarez scored a pair of rear-naked choke victories to open the tournament, submitting Manuel Priego and Yuki Takahashi in the first two rounds.
In the semifinals, Olivarez ran into former CJJ world champion Richard Alarcon. A talented wrestler in his own right and an accomplished BJJ black belt, Alarcon represented perhaps the stiffest test of Olivarez’s young career thus far. But after a competitive regulation period, Olivarez secured the rear-naked choke in overtime to punch his ticket to the tournament final.
There, he squared off with Robert Drysdale black belt Zack Schneider, who had scored three straight rear-naked chokes in overtime to score his spot in the final.
Once again, Olivarez’s aggressive back-taking skills proved to be too much as he secured the rear-naked choke in regulation to claim the bantamweight CJJ world title.
