One of the elite grappling events in the nation is scheduled for March 20, 2016 at the New York Athletic Center. The New York Open is a team tournament with grapplers from Israel, Germany, France, Georgia, USA, and Canada. This team tournament features former, current, and future Olympians as well as World Champions. In attendance are 2012 and 2008 US Olympian and BJJ Black Belt Travis Stevens (under John Danaher), 2012 Olympic Gold Medal and 2012 World Champion Kayla Harrison, 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist and Silver Medalist in the 2013 World Championship Marti Malloy. Also in attendance are French team member and 2014 World Champion Clarisse Agbegnenou as well as US Coach and former 4x Olympian (2 Bronze medals) and former World Champion Jimmy Pedro (not competing in this tournament). In this tournament, wins are given to teams based on victories as well as total points.
The New York Open was sold out last year but tickets are still available for this years event. This years event is sponsored by New York Athletic Club (NYAC), Dr. Arthur Canario, BitLanders, Suez North America, and Adidas.
If you can’t make it to the event, there are still tickets available for the Monday workout at NYAC, 7th Floor, March 30th, 6:30 – 8:30 for $30.00. At this clinic participants will have the opportunity to learn from and perform techniques on high level Judoka.
