ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion Mikey Musumeci believes he’ll face Demetrious Johnson in his next match.
Mikey Musumeci has his sights set on a grappling match with one of the greatest pound-for-pound MMA fighters ever.
The current ONE flyweight submission grappling world champion recently told ONE Championship that he’s anticipating facing Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson in his next grappling match. A former longtime UFC flyweight champion, Johnson is the reigning ONE flyweight MMA champion.
At the moment, Musumeci is in Thailand helping his sister, Tammi Musumeci, in her final preparations for her match against Amanda “Tubby” Alequin, set to go down this Friday at ONE Fight Night 12: Superlek vs. Khalilov on Prime Video.
“I think my next match will be with Demetrious Johnson. That’s what I think is gonna happen so I’m really excited to fight a legend – to grapple a legend, don’t get mad at me guys for saying fight…
“So it would be an honor to grapple with him and that would probably be the biggest match of my life in grappling so far, like with viewership. I don’t know, just stepping on the mat with ‘Mighty Mouse,’ to touch a legend, would be so cool. That’s what I’m looking forward to and whatever else ONE has for me, I want to stay active and busy.”
This isn’t the first time Musumeci has called for a grappling match against Johnson. In May, just minutes after he defeated no-gi world champion Osamah Almarwai to retain his ONE world title, Musumeci asked for a showdown with the iconic MMA fighter.
A brown belt in BJJ, Johnson has proven to be an elite ground fighter in an MMA context but has practically no experience in high-level grappling. Of his 25 career MMA wins, eight have come via submission.
In his most recent outing, in the main event of the same card on which Musumeci defeated Almarwai, Johnson successfully defended his flyweight MMA world title, earning a decision over rival Adriano Moraes.
