Submission Underground 19 looks like it will be the holiday gift we’ve been hoping for after a rough year for jiu-jitsu.
The promotion is returning with another championship match for current title holder Mason Fowler, plus a number of other superfights involving some of BJJ and MMA’s biggest stars.
Fowler will be going up against Satoshi Ishii — a decorated judoka who won gold at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Ishii is also a professional MMA fighter, having competed for Rizin, Bellator, and the PFL. He’s a worthy challenger for Fowler, who has defended his SUG title multiple times now, most recently against Vinny Magalhaes at SUG 18.
Amanda Loewen and Felicia Spencer will have a championship title of their own on the line as they go head-to-head in another big match that evening. Loewen is a Fight 2 Win veteran and has competed multiple times for SUG, submitting Jessica Eye, Erin Herle, and Gillian Robertson in overtime. Spencer, in addition to being a BJJ black belt, is also a former Invicta champion and current UFC fighter. Half of her professional MMA wins have come via submission, and though she couldn’t defeat Amanda Nunes back in June at UFC 250, she did go the distance with the double-champ.
A number of other major MMA stars will be making their appearances as well. SUG has also scheduled matches between Ryan Bader and Derrick Lewis, Donald Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos, and Anthony Johnson and Fabricio Werdum.
The full card announcement for the event will be released soon, so keep your eye out for other exciting match announcements for SUG 19.
Submission Underground 19 will take place on Sunday, December 20 and can be streamed live on UFC FightPass.
