It looks like the wildly ambitious jiu jitsu start-up Substars has ran into some trouble. This comes after putting on only one event featuring the likes of Gordon Ryan, Aaron “Tex” Johnson, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and Curtis Blaydes.
Sources close to the situation have informed grapplinginsider.com that a number of athletes who appeared on the card are yet to receive any payment . While there was a lack of communication from organizers initially, in the last few hours, they have began to message athletes to inform them that they won’t be receiving full payment.
Payment for pro events usually takes place on the night, so a delay of payment this long is a red flag and it remains to be seen if athletes will receive any compensation for competing on the card.
Substars was streamed on pay-per-view and was headlined by a match between Gordon Ryan and Tex Johnson while also including a celebrity Sumo match with elite MMA fighters, Curtis Blaydes and Anthony “Rumble” Johnson. One of the biggest shames to come out of this is that Gordon Ryan was set to donate the money he received for appearing to The We Defy Foundation. As a result of this breaking news, it’s unlikely the charity will receive anything and if they do, with the “about 10%” figure that’s been quoted it will obviously be a far cry from the amount that they were expecting initially.
