Four people (including the gunman) were killed and over a dozen more were injured in yet another U.S.-based mass shooting days ago at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California. Victims and their loved ones must now cope not only with the emotional trauma following such a horrific event, but also the sudden and unreasonably high funeral and medical expenses that follow.
Now, some big names in the BJJ and MMA community are coming together to provide a light in the unspeakable darkness for the victims of the shooting. Gilroy BJJ owner and two-time Master World Champion Carlos Melo (who also helped spearhead the movement to open up more IBJJF divisions for female masters division competitors) is hosting an open mat and seminar featuring none other than twelve-time World Champion Caio Terra and renowned UFC coach Dave Camarillo. Fellow BJJ black belt and MMA fighter Anthony Figueroa will also be in attendance.
The event organizers are suggesting a minimum donation of $25 to attend, and all proceeds will go toward the Gilroy Foundation, which has set up a relief fund for the victims of the shooting. The event (which is gi and no-gi) will be held in the gymnasium of Gilroy High School on August 11 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Considering the costs of a normal seminar with Caio Terra, this jiu-jitsu event is an incredible and affordable opportunity to learn from not only him, but other seriously accomplished black belts in the sport. Beyond that, though, it provides the chance for the BJJ community to do something kind for those in need.
