In a great example of how not to give up, Ecuador’s Johnny Tama came back from behind to beat favorite João Miyao at the UAEJJF New York Open, held last weekend.
After tangling Tama in his legs, reaching the back and attempting the finish, Miyao spun to submit on the foot. Tama went along, and they both left the fight area. The ref interpreted it as running away from the submission and gave Miyao two points. With just a few seconds to react, Tama attacked. Miyao sat down to set up a guard, but, with a firm step, Tama arrived on the side and went for the north–south with a strong grip, stabilizing his foe and securing the decisive three points.
