Ryan Hall Hopes To Compete at 2022 ADCC Championships

Jiu-jitsu specialist and current UFC featherweight fighter Ryan Hall got back into the win column at UFC 269 with a unanimous decision victory over Darrick Minner. After a string of injuries and cancellations, followed by a loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 264, this was Hall’s first win since July 2019.

Following his win over Minner, Hall spoke to the media about the fight, changes he has recently made to his training, and his plans moving forward.

Of interest to grappling fans: Hall indicated he hopes to compete at the 2022 ADCC Championships.

“I’m looking forward to doing ADCC, Abu Dhabi submission wrestling next year,” Hall said. “I’ve been doing jiu-jitsu for almost 18 years now. I haven’t competed in that sport in a long time, but I do have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of matches. Obviously I’ll be doing some jiu-jitsu prior to that if the stars align and I’m able to get myself in there… Inactivity hurts me a lot more in MMA than it does in jiu-jitsu.”

Right now, Hall does not have a spot secured at the 2022 ADCC Championships. He could earn a spot by winning one of the ADCC Trials events, or he could be invited to compete.

Hall is well known within the jiu-jitsu community as an important figure in the development of the modern leg lock game. He has twice competed at the ADCC Championships, winning third in 2009 on the strength of wins over Jeff Curan and Jeff Glover. Hall would compete again at the 2011 ADCC Championships, losing in the quarterfinals to Robson Moura.

Hall has not competed in grappling since 2012, choosing instead to focus all of his energy on MMA. With the win over Minner at UFC 269, Hall improved his professional MMA record to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the UFC.

While grappling fans have long been aware of Hall’s submission prowess, MMA fans worldwide now also see him as one of the sport’s best grapplers, thanks to his time and wins in the UFC.
