The two were rivals on the mat, but now they root for each other’s success in MMA. The fighters in question are Roger Gracie and Ronaldo Jacaré, two of Jiu-Jitsu’s greatest representatives in the world of MMA.
Both black belts saw action on May 15 at Strikeforce. The two remarked on each other’s performances in NOCAUTE magazine 89, Gracie Publishing’s Brazilian MMA monthly magazine, and spoke of what each expects of the other off the mat.
Roger Gracie did a good job in the striking department, but beat the seasoned Kevin Randleman by submission with a rear-naked choke. Gracie’s third MMA win drew praise from former rival Jacaré.
“He kept his cool and used his Jiu-Jitsu excellence masterfully. He used his Jiu-Jitsu well and hardly missed a position; he’s big and knows how to use his size. He has what it takes to be champion,” says Jacaré.
Jacaré had a bit of a harder time, but he too won, overcoming Joey Villasenor by unanimous decision.
“Jacaré has always been an exceptional Jiu-Jitsu fighter and competed well. He’s been doing similarly well in MMA and has just what it takes to do as well there as he did in Jiu-Jitsu. He never tires and that makes him dangerous,” wagers Gracie.
Major rivals on the mat; could one day the two face off in MMA as well?
