Roberto Cyborg wins IBJJF Heavyweight GP

Cyborg after winning the title. Blanca Marisa Garcia

The voice of experience spoke louder this Saturday, August 24. Roberto Cyborg, a veteran swimming in a sea of young and hungry BJJ stars, won the 2019 IBJJF Heavyweight Grand Prix, which took place in Vegas alongside the Master Worlds.

The no-gi tourney had 50,000 dollars up for grabs (40,000 for first; 10,000 for second) and eight contestants. To claim the title, Cyborg (profiled by Graciemag here) used his powerful game of takedowns and control from the top.

In his first match, he beat Victor Hugo by advantages. Then, against Lucas Hulk, two penalties gave him the spot in the final versus João Gabriel Rocha. The two finalists had an even fight — a tie on points and advantages. The judges then decided that Cyborg deserved the trophy.
