According to a report from Brazilian news outlet Combate, the famous “Fight Island” may have its first main event fight already sorted out.
Darren Till and Robert Whittaker have reportedly agreed to fight each other in the main event of a July 25 UFC event. The news hasn’t been made official yet, and no location has been announced, but the date would line up with Dana White’s plan to have the promotion hosting events on the island.
Whittaker vs. Till was originally scheduled for August 15, which would have been the UFC’s return to Dublin, Ireland, but the pandemic has affected the status of the event, so it was moved up a few weeks.
White, for his part, has confirmed with ESPN that the matchup was in the works, but didn’t say when or where the fight might happen.
Whittaker has won nine out of his last ten fights, losing his middleweight title to Israel Adesanya in October at UFC 243. He was scheduled to fight Jared Cannonier at UFC 248, but later withdrew from the fight due to what he described as “burnout.”
The 18-2 Till is a worthy opponent for the former champ. He came back from his only two losses to defeat Kevin Gastelum by split decision in November.
The Jiu-Jitsu Times will provide updates on this event as they become available.
