Renzo Gracie and John Danaher Release Free Videos In Wake Of School Closures Due To Corona Virus

In this turbulent and uncertain time for the BJJ community, the closing of schools due to coronavirus fears has hurt people at every level. While an understandable precaution on the part of gym owners, many are left wondering how to keep their passion alive from behind closed doors. Today, Renzo Gracie and John Danaher have put forth efforts to assist in the mater.

Renzo Gracie: “It’s on! Renzo Gracie Online Academy is completely free for (at least) 30 days. No strings attached. No credit card required. This is the least that I can do for the community. Our platform has currently over 600 lessons. But I will make sure to record many more and also add live seminars. Thank you for all the support. Jiu-Jitsu over everything.  Isto é o mínimo que posso fazer pela comunidade. Nossa plataforma já tem mais de 600 aulas e vou gravar muitas outras. Vamos fazer transmissões ao vivo também. É só se cadastrar e usar.

The black belts have each announced the release of free BJJ instructional videos to aid in home training. Gracie took to FaceBook stating that his online academy would be available for the next 30 days completely free, and Danaher announced on Instagram a new BJJ Fanatics home training instructional also for free. The Instructional is being edited, and should be out in a few days according to Danaher.

John Danaher: “Special announcement: corona virus: Over the last few days the Jiu Jitsu community world wide has faced a situation that is entirely unprecedented in the history of our sport – the majority of students and schools will have to cease regular training. We all accept that there will be many times we have to stay away from the mats – injuries, family commitments, travel etc etc can all keep us out of the dojo – but this is different, we will all be kept away at the same time despite being physically able to train. I have received a vast number of requests for advice on how to train and improve while unable to attend the dojo. Last night I called the team at BJJ fanatics and jumped on a train to Boston to film a video on exactly that question. BJJ Fanatics will release the video in the next few days (after editing) FOR FREE. It’s yours. I want to do this for the BJJ Community. Jiu Jitsu has given me the best times of my life and now I want to give something back to Jiu Jitsu during the worst time for the sport. One thing I have always loved about this game is the passion and commitment of the people involved in it. Every day I see men and women from all walks of life make incredible sacrifices to get to their Jiu Jitsu goals – this ones for you. The video covers how to train effectively by yourself so that when this crazy time is over and we all get back to the business of snapping limbs and strangling each other unconscious, you are better than you were before this damn virus screwed things up. I cover my favorite solo drills that I use whenever I’m beat up, traveling or just unable to get on the mat. I explain exactly what the link between the solo movement and the actual combat skill along with an actual workout program you can use solo to boost your skill level. Remember – every MOVE in this sport has an underlying MOVEMENT that makes it possible. Without the movement, the move won’t happen. Training your movement skills will enhance your performance of the moves when you get back in action. BJJ Fanatics just needs to edit it and then release in a couple of days. I’m on the train home now, tired but happy – wishing you all the best – stay safe and stay on track

The trend, seemingly starting with Legion BJJ and spreading to most other prominent gyms, has effectively changed the landscape of BJJ in the blink of an eye. Academies are on lockdown for as long as 30 days, leaving grappling lovers to sit and worry in their homes with the rest of the country.

This epidemic is causing worldwide panic. And for us who’s stress-relieving hobby involves sweaty contact with other people, it definitely hits us in different places. Seeing acts of charity like this from big names certainly reminds me of how much we need to look out for each other. Ironically enough, the path forward can be summed up by one of the subjects in this article.
“The secret of this sport is, while you’re the nail, hang in there, let them hit you, until the day you become the hammer, then you smash them back!”
-Renzo Gracie

Hang in there everybody. And protect your neck.
