After four successful events in their Kumite series, 3rd Coast Grappling is coming back yet again with their fifth installment.
This time, the event will see eight men vying for another $10,000 prize. But first, they have to make their way up the -170lb no-gi bracket full of 3CG veterans and newcomers alike.
After steadily rolling out the competitor list for the tournament, 3rd Coast Grappling has finally revealed the bracket for their Kumite V event, and it’s packed with some seriously explosive first-round matches:
Hugo Marques vs. Roberto Jimenez
This will be Marques’ 2020 competitive debut, with his last endeavor ending in gold at last year’s Florida Winter Open. The 2018 No-Gi World Champion holds a win over fellow Kumite V competitor Johnny Tama from Worlds in 2018, and there’s a possibility for a rematch if they both make it to the finals. First, though, Marques will have to get past Roberto Jimenez, who’s been a regular at 3rd Coast Grappling’s Kumite events. Indeed, Jimenez was the runner-up at the first 3CG Kumite, and he won the whole $10,000 at Kumite III. After being stopped by Kumite IV champion Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu a couple weeks ago, Jimenez will be more motivated than ever to add another big victory to his 3CG record.

Jonnatas Gracie vs. Vitor Oliveira
2020 Euros champ and 3CG Kumite II competitor Jonnatas Gracie will be making his return to try for the $10,000 grand prize as well. Gracie was stopped by Victor Hugo in the semifinals back in June, but a win against Vitor Oliveira will put him one step closer to victory at this installment of the Kumite series. Oliveira, however, will be looking to make his mark on the 3CG scene in his Kumite debut. The multiple-time World Masters champion will be hoping to avenge his loss to Gracie from the Euros finals earlier this year, and you can be sure that this rematch will light up the first round of matches at this event.

Johnny Tama vs. Renato Canuto
Johnny Tama, another Kumite veteran, will be trying his hand once again at making it to the top on the 3CG mats. Tama competed at 3CG: Kumite III and was scheduled to return at Kumite IV, but an injury forced him to withdraw. Now, he’s healed and ready to make a statement against Renato Canuto. Canuto will be returning to the competitive scene for the first time since his Kasai Pro 7 match against Dante Leon. The 2017 no-gi world champion had an absolutely electrifying match against Garry Tonon at ADCC last year, and regardless of the outcome with his match with Tama, we can expect a lot of excitement in this first-round showdown.

Tye Ruotolo vs. Oliver Taza
Finally, Tye Ruotolo will be coming back to the 3CG: Kumite series for the first time since his Kumite III match against Roberto Jimenez. The purple belt is one of the most talked about up-and-coming grapplers of today, and his impressive ADCC performance last year offered us a glimpse of his success to come. Oliver Taza, though, is not to be underestimated. The accomplished Tristar/RGA athlete will have the chance for a rematch with Canuto, who bested him at ADCC last year, and with such a submission-focused game, he’ll be sure to pull out some creative stuff to make it to the finals and bring home the big win.
