Police Chief Offers Free Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Lessons To Officers

Police Chief Scott Smith of Ludlow, Kentucky, is offering free Brazilian jiu-jitsu lessons to police officers.

Why?

Simple. As we here at the Jiu-Jitsu Times and numerous other police officers have argued, Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a safe and effective way to control a resisting suspect.

“It’s laughable, but it’s sad,” Chief Smith said about many police officers’ inability to control a resisting suspect. “And that’s what the community will say, ‘Why couldn’t you take this one skinny guy down? How is it you couldn’t control him? How is it that it ended in a shooting?'”

Smith also opined that if officers are going to the shooting range twice a year, they should probably be training combatives twice a year.

SWAT officer Michael Brock is living proof that Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a safe and effective means to control a suspect.

“I put him [the suspect] in an armbar, took him to the ground, and the situation was done,” Brock told WCPO. “Nobody was injured. He went to jail.”
