Polaris Professional Grappling is back after a lengthy break due to Coronavirus with their latest event, Polaris 13 on Saturday, 11th July. The event has changed slightly from it’s original intention as an Absolute Grand Prix and due to travel restrictions, it will instead be a UK Grand Prix that will feature some of the best grapplers from the four corners of the country meeting to determine who is the best that the UK has to offer. The prize fund has also been reduced from the original £20,000 to £10,000, no doubt to compensate for the fact that the event has been forced to take place behind closed doors and will not be able to generate any revenue from ticket sales.
The entrants for Polaris 13: UK Grand Prix have not yet been announced, but it’s rather telling that the first promotional image released is of Ross Nicholls, one of the top British grapplers around who narrowly missed out on taking a huge scalp at ADCC 2019 in the form of JT Torres. It’s also worth noting that one of the first entrants announced for the original Absolute Grand Prix was a British-based Heayweight who’s been making waves on the No Gi scene, Freddie Vosgrone. Additionally, a miniature tournament was held behind closed doors to find the final entrant for the original Grand Prix and Nick Ronan emerged victorious to earn his place, something that the organisers might choose to honour regardless of the event changes.
