On last Friday, May 3, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza saw his dream debut in the UFC threatened after his opponent, Costa Philippou, suffered a cut on the eyebrow during training. The UFC quickly took action and offered a new battle for the Brazilian, a match with Chris Camozzi for the May 18 card in Jaragua do Sul.
GRACIEMAG.com caught up with Jacare after the announcement of the change in opponent, and the fighter guaranteed that he’s still going strong in his purpose: To be among the best in class, regardless who he has to fight.
“I was training, [and so was] Camozzi,” Souza said, “because he fights at the same event, then the only change is that I’d take a top guy in the category and it was very motivating for me to step up for the responsibility that was generated. I like having responsibilities, having difficulties and challenges.
“Camozzi is a tough guy, comes from several consecutive victories. I do not see it as easier than Philippou. Every fighter is hard, all that are in the UFC have qualities and are there because they deserve it. Camozzi has four wins, has worked in Brazil, beat a Brazilian and it shows that he can fight as equals with anyone.”
Asked if he still maintains the strategy of taking the fight to the ground, Jacare did not hide the excitement.
“It’s where I always want to go,” he replied. “I want to bring it to the floor and finish … I will try to use this weapon against him.”
