Pedro Munhoz Tests Positive For COVID-19, Pulled From July 15 UFC Fight Against Frankie Edgar

COVID-19 has taken yet another fighter off an upcoming UFC card.

Pedro Munhoz, who was originally set to fight Frankie Edgar on “Fight Island” (a.k.a. Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island) on July 15, has tested positive for the virus and has been pulled from the bout. The news was originally reported by MMA Fusion and was confirmed by MMA Fighting.

The fight was set to be the co-main event for the evening, which will feature a featherweight fight between Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige as the main event. There has thus far not been an announcement for a replacement co-headliner.

The fight would’ve been Edgar’s debut at 135 lbs, and the news had just broken that he’d signed a new multi-fight contract with the UFC. The promotion is reportedly still trying to find him a replacement opponent for next week’s event.

Munhoz’s diagnosis is the latest positive coronavirus test result in the UFC. Over the weekend, Gilbert Burns (along with his coach and brother/cornerman) also tested positive for the virus ahead of his UFC 251. However, Jorge Masvidal stepped in just six days before the event, and he’s since passed his own COVID-19 test and will be proceeding to Abu Dhabi.
