What started off as an apparently good-natured roll between 2015 ADCC champion Orlando Sanchez and UFC middleweight Sean Strickland took a controversial turn after a standing submission from Sanchez that Strickland called a “**** move.”
The athletes were wrestling on their feet for just a few seconds before Sanchez countered Strickland’s underhook with a Mir lock attempt. Though Strickland quickly slipped his arm out and avoided danger the first time, Sanchez locked the submission on again the next time Strickland got the underhook. This time, Strickland yelled, then struck Sanchez and kicked him away. That was the extent of the physical nature of the altercation, but the men argued for a few more minutes about whether the submission was an unfair and dangerous move against Strickland (who has a fight against Uriah Hall coming up at the end of July) or simply a quick submission.
Things eventually cooled down between Strickland and Sanchez, though Strickland later opted to not continue their roll.
Thankfully, it appears that Sanchez and Strickland have made up to some extent, with both of them exchanging some apparently good-natured banter on Strickland’s Instagram post of the video.
The Jiu-Jitsu Times has reached out to Strickland and Sanchez for comment and will update this article if we receive a response.
