Miesha Tate, former UFC bantamweight and sometimes professional BJJ commentator, is not one of the fans cheering over the newly announced “BMF” belt. The brainchild of UFC daddy Dana White, the “Bad M-er F-er” bragging rights belt was announced earlier this week as a way to get welterweight brawler Jorge Masvidal and hemp-loving grappler Nate Diaz into the ring together. And while the overwhelming feedback on the novelty championship has been “weird, but also cool,” some fighters are concerned the move continues to send the UFC in the wrong direction.
“Start putting the belt around people who are not [champions], then what does the belt mean, exactly?” asked Tate on Fight Nation on Sirius XM. “It really does marry that WWE feeling to the UFC.”
Tate’s concerns were also echoed by Leon Edwards, the UFC welterweight on an eight fighting winning streak who’s been waiting for his title shot for at least the last year.
“Two men [Diaz and Masvidal] who can’t get the title?” Edwards told MMA Fighting. “They can’t get the world title so you create some ******* weird **** *** title. It’s a journeyman mentality. My thing is to get a world title shot. Let’s me and Kamaru (Usman) run it back.
Most folks don’t agree however.
