Nicholas Meregali just defeated Leandro Lo in a huge upset at the 2017 World Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship.
Meregali pulled guard early and utilized his De La Riva and spider guard to control Lo throughout the majority of the match. About halfway through, Lo was able to score himself two advantage points with a pass and a near mount, but soon after, Meregali scored a huge takedown that earned him two extra points. A intense scramble ensued that got the crowd in Long Beach, California, roaring with excitement, even if the only result was an extra advantage point for Lo.
With minutes left, Meregali pulled guard once again and went to De La Riva. Again Lo couldn’t pass, and he ended up in Meregali’s guard for the rest of the match.
