New Zealand BJJ Students Perform Haka To Celebrate Teammate’s Black Belt Promotion

No one ever forgets the moment they receive their black belt, but New Zealand jiu-jitsu practitioner (and brand new black belt) Eldon Paea received an extra special honor when he was promoted.

The special moment took place at Combat Room BJJ, which is in Wellington on the North Island. As Paea received his black belt, a few of his teammates stood up and began performing the haka to celebrate.

The haka is a traditional dance in Maori culture. The haka has different purposes and varieties — it is often performed at events like funerals, weddings, or sporting events. It is also commonly done to celebrate major achievements, and it was also used by warriors preparing for battle.
