Well, Mike Perry is at it again.
In a vicious and somewhat baffling feud with actor Michael Jai White, Perry called him the N word. Had he at least not used the term as an insult, he might have gotten a pass from his employers, as he miraculously has before.
However, not only did he clearly use the slur in anger and as an insult, he also doubled down on it hard. “A white man said that to you because you straight up being one,” he elaborated in a following tweet. Ouch.
“Platinum” Mike Perry is easily one of the silliest, most colorful fighters in MMA, a sport known for colorful characters. Perry and his team get away with a lot because it can be funny, and because there is a certain trailer-trash kind of innocence to his near constant stream of faux pas.
You don’t get a real sense of malice from most of his antics. Whether he’s posting pictures of himself in blackface, or cutting an impressively racist promo, he seems genuinely unaware that he is doing anything wrong. It’s almost like no one ever bothered teaching him how to act like a normal human being because it was too funny watching him blunder through his time in the public eye.
But at some point you’re going to cross a line, and people are going to stop laughing. You might argue that this happened already when his cornerman, Alex Nicholson, yelled “He can’t even open his motherf–king eyes” about Perry’s Asian opponent, Hyun Gyu Lim on the live broadcast of UFC 202. But using the N word in 2020 to publicly insult a black man, and then to continue that line of thought? Yeah, that’s pretty far over the line.
If it makes you feel any better, you can watch him on the receiving end of a vicious armbar finish thanks to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
