Just a few days ago, Third Coast Grappling got all of us hyped up when they announced that Craig Jones and Josh Hinger would compete in their June 29th co-main event. Today, promoter Ryan McGuire has released yet another big jiu-jitsu matchup to look forward to.
Mike Perez will face off against Jackson Sousa in what is sure to be an action-packed no-gi match earlier in the evening. McGuire explained his rationale behind the matchup: “With ADCC Trials and the big show on the horizon, we wanted to bring together two of the most exciting competitors to grace ADCC in recent years, match them under our rule set, and give the fans a show. Look for fast-paced, aggressive action from beginning to end. Mike Perez has Houston roots, so this will be a homecoming of sorts.”
Perez has won the Trials twice (in 2013 and 2015). Although he’s only been a black belt for a little over a year, he’s had a strong showing so far with a bronze at last year’s IBJJF No-Gi Pans. Sousa is an established and accomplished veteran in the competitive black belt scene, having taken third place at ADCC in 2017 and earning the title of No-Gi World Champion and No-Gi Pans Champion a few years prior.
McGuire will slowly be releasing the news of more matches as the event draws nearer, and while he hasn’t given the Jiu-Jitsu Times the green light to share them quite yet, we’ve gotten a glimpse of what he has in store. Trust us — you’ll want to make sure your schedule is cleared for June 29 when the second edition of Third Coast Grappling kicks off.
