Mike Perez has just become the latest addition to a stacked tournament on April 4th as the Polaris Absolute Grand Prix comes to Newport, South Wales. He joins the other Heavyweight competitors all vying for a chance to be crowned Polaris’ inaugural Absolute king, Adam Wardzinski and Freddie Vosgrone. Also announced for the Grand Prix is the lightest competitor to date, Patrick Gaudio and the heaviest and current favorite to take the title home, Kaynan Duarte.
Mike Perez is a very well-rounded grappler and has previously won the ADCC US Trials on two separate occasions back in 2013 and 2015. His appearance at ADCC 2019 ended in heartbreak however as he went out in the first round of both his weight and the Absolute. Ironically, the men he lost to are both competing in the Polaris Absolute Grand Prix and he has a good chance of getting a shot at redemption against either Adam Wardzinski or Patrick Gaudio.
While Perez doesn’t have an extensive professional grappling career, having only competed at the highest levels of the sport for around three years, he already owns some notable wins. He’s already beaten Craig Jones, Dante Leon and the coach of the best female grappler on the planet right now, Darragh O’Connaill. His match against O’Connaill was at Polaris 9 and is his only appearance on the promotion to date, he’ll no doubt be looking to preserve that unbeaten Polaris record.
