In order to make himself the big name of the IBJJF’s Brasilia Open, held last weekend at Cruzeiro Gymnasium, Yan Pica-Pau of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu had to face big challenges.
First, in his weight division, he beat three opponents and finished with a triangle to take gold. But it was in the absolute that Yan really shone brightly. His weight not exceeding the 82.3kg limit of the middleweight division, Yan had before him in the open division the weekend’s ultra-heavyweight champion, Raul Almeida (Nova União). The ultra-heavyweight division features athletes over 100kg, by the way.
To nab the win, Yan worked on top, which included scoring two points from a good-looking takedown. Later on, a clock choke would end all resistance by Raul .
