Saved By the Bell star and Gracie Barra competitor Mario Lopez has officially completed his run at blue belt. According to an Instagram post published on his account over the weekend, Lopez received his purple belt from his coach Robert Hill.
Lopez saw quite a bit of success at blue belt on the IBJJF Open circuit, though his matches haven’t been without occasional controversy due to debatably questionable referee calls.
Moving forward, however, Lopez seems excited to prepare for the next level of competition, writing on Instagram, “This purple belt has been a fun ride…Thank you to my Professors & training partners for elevating my game!”
He received congratulations on social media from several luminaries of the combat sports world, including current interim UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno and UFC veteran Holly Holm, as well as jiu-jitsu royalty such as Jean Jaques Machado, Rener Gracie, and Gabi Garcia.
