The maiden São Paulo International Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship took place this weekend at José Corrêa Gymnasium in Barueri, Greater São Paulo, and the first-ever champion of the event is Renato Cardoso, a gem polished up at the local chapter of team CheckMat.
The Rodrigo Cavaca student was impressive throughout Saturday and Sunday, getting the finish in all his matches on his way to the medium heavyweight and absolute gold medals at the IBJJF event. “I gave my all. I went on the attack and didn’t give anyone a chance. It was a significant championship, being the first Open in the state of São Paulo. I’m really pleased,” said the CheckMat representative.
At brown belt the big name was Jackson Souza dos Santos, another CheckMat rep, who himself snapped up double gold, at heavyweight and open weight.
